Frequently Asked Questions
What is Lifestyle Medicine?
Lifestyle medicine is an evidence-based speciality that uses lifestyle therapeutic interventions to prevent and treat chronic medical conditions.
The six pillars of lifestyle medicine are physical activity, social connection, healthy nutrition, reducing risky behaviors, restorative sleep, and stress management.
Is Dr. Amanda Scott a Primary Care Physician (PCP)?
As a specialist, she will dedicate her time to focusing on addressing the root causes of your health concerns and, at this time, she is not a PCP (primary care physician). She will act in coordination with your providers and dedicate her time to enhancing your medical care and wellbeing. This allows her to spend the time that is needed on lifestyle medicine, creating long-lasting and personalized care plans.
Will Dr. Scott prescribe, or recommend, any supplements and vitamins?
She focuses on using food as the primary source of nutrients, so that supplements and vitamins are generally not needed. This natural approach also avoids any risk of side effects from supplements. She may recommend certain vitamins (Such as Vit B12 and Vit D), when appropriate.
Will she prescribe weight loss medications?
Dr. Scott will focus on losing weight naturally with personalized nutrition and exercise plans. Weight is usually lost naturally as you transition to a healthier lifestyle, even if it’s not your primary goal. This focus away from medicines helps reduce the time spent on obtaining medication authorizations, searching for pharmacies that have the desired medications in stock and also helps reduce the risk of medication side effects. If you would like to continue weight loss medications obtained through other means, that is okay. Dr. Scott is here to support you in your journey.
What should I do before my meet and greet, or before my consultation?
For the meet and greet, this is a brief visit so that Dr. Amanda Scott can understand your needs and explain the role of lifestyle medicine in your medical care. You do not need to bring any documents, but should be prepared to identify your specific goals in working with her.
For the consultation, you should make sure you have your most recent medical records, which includes the note from your last physical exam, last set of lab results (Blood test results), and any other pertinent recent medical results. You should also complete any forms from Dr. Scott before the visit, so these can be reviewed together at your appointment. Please bring in a hard copy of these to your appointment, unless your visits are all virtual, in which case you can provide documents through the patient portal.
Will my Insurance, or health savings account cover these visits?
Currently, I do not take insurance, including Medicare. This is due to the difficulty getting coverage for these types of services, and the constraints of medical care through insurance.
You can research the use of your Health Savings Accounts (HSA), Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRA), or other medical financial accounts to see if these cover Lifestyle Medicine visits. Your ability to use these accounts is determined by your policy. As this depends on the rules and policies of your specific plan/coverage, you are responsible for confirming appropriate use of these accounts.
